Right, I found out the same after reading the page pointed out by Wander, and the older specifications. SD 2.0 SDHC requires 512 byte sectors now, but the older standard is still used for 2GB cards.
Most USB card readers seem to translate the native sector size to 512 byte sectors internally, and we've seen that the linux SCSI disk driver together with the USB mass storage driver doesn't cope well with the device Alexia is using.
