Hello,
This is a bug report in the format suggested by <http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/docs/lkml/reporting-bugs.html>. My apologies for the large size of this message, but I didn't really know what would be relevant so I erred on the side of detail.
[1.] One line summary of the problem:
The more bttv tuners in use by MythTV, the more CPU top(1) claims to use for itself.
[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
I'm getting some really strange behavior using MythTV 0.10. I've recently installed a second tuner and I've noticed that each tuner I use seems to slow down the CPU. With no tuners in use on my Athlon XP 2400+, top takes 0.7-1.3% CPU (according to itself, though ps agrees). With 1 tuner active, top takes 2.2-2.9% and mythbackend takes about 34-40%. With 2 tuners active, top takes 4.2-5.5% CPU and each of the two major mythbackends takes about 42-48% CPU. (Now, I can understand that top may take polynomial time in the number of processes, but we're talking an extra two or three processes out of 100-something, and running extra copies of top doesn't have the same effect.)
Both tuners are Hauppauge 401s, using bttv and btaudio, and there are no unusual messages in the logs so far as I can tell.
This also happens with one recording and one being watched live, though of course that's really just two recording and one playing. With one recording and an old recording being watched, top takes 3.1-4.0% CPU and the one major mythbackend takes 42-60%.
This problem does *not* show up when using xawtv, but as I understand that uses a different interface. I don't know of any good way to simulate MythTV except itself. Rebooting, removing/reinsterting various modules, restarting various processes: none of these makes any difference so far as I've found.
It looks to me like something isn't scaling here. It's not something I see for other parts of the system (e.g. making lots of requests at Apache might cause it to fork more children and take up more overall CPU, but top (and each individual httpd) doesn't take up any more CPU). If it were just MythTV taking more CPU that would be one thing, but that top and other processes also seem to need a larger share of the pie makes me suspect a problem in the kernel.
I've asked on the relevant MythTV list but (as of now) none of the responses have helped. See <http://www.gossamer-threads.com/archive/MythTV_C2/Users_F11/tuner_use_slowi ng_down_entire_CPU_P74097/> for that thread.
