You need to build & load the USB mass storage driver and it needs SCSI support to operate.
After building these, load your kernel or these modules and plug in the USB Zip drive. The usb-storage module should see it and register it with the SCSI code and then the SCSI code prints something like "Device found on sdb". So you: mount -t vfat /dev/sdb4 /mnt/zip [if the Zip media is still factory-formatted, it uses partition 4]. And mkdir the mount point, of course.
