Summary: serial autoconfig sometimes fails.
I am using a Modem made by a company called Actiontec which they call the 56K Internal PCI Call Waiting Modem. My serial driver is compiled as a module, and has been giving me irregular behavior. Inserting the module results in one of three things:
1. The modem is detected successfully. 2. The modem is detected but with only a 8250 UART. 3. The modem is not detected and an autoconfig failed message is logged: Jul 29 17:53:12 dragon kernel: Serial driver version 5.01 (2000-05-29) with MANY_PORTS SHARE_IRQ SERIAL_PCI enabled Jul 29 17:53:12 dragon kernel: ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A Jul 29 17:53:12 dragon kernel: register_serial(): autoconfig failed
Here is a log of a successful insmod: Jul 27 20:13:48 dragon kernel: Serial driver version 5.01 (2000-05-29) with MANY_PORTS SHARE_IRQ SERIAL_PCI enabled Jul 27 20:13:48 dragon kernel: ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A Jul 27 20:13:48 dragon kernel: ttyS04 at port 0xd400 (irq = 5) is a 1655
I have not found any pattern in the order these occur.
I noticed a remark at some point that some serial cards are not working perfectly in 2.4.0 yet, so I am hoping that I can provide some information that would be useful.
I am using kernel version 2.4.0-test5.
