I tried to build 2.3.16 on an SS-10 with 2.2.10 currently installed, I figured what the hell, 2.2.10 isn't stable anyway so might as well play with the new stuff.
I downloaded the bzip'd tar file, did:
bunzip < linux-2.3.16.tar.bz2 | tar -xvf -
.. in /usr/src
Then I make a symlink:
ln -s linux-2.3.16 linux
Did:
make mrproper
make menuconfig
... configured the kernel pretty much the way I have the existing kernel configured.
make vmlinux
Which exploded with the following:
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -D__SMP__ -m32 -pipe -mno-fpu -fcall-used-g5 -fcall-used-g7 -DUTS_MACHINE='"sparc"' -c -o init/version.o init/version.c make -C kernel make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.3.16/kernel' make all_targets make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.3.16/kernel' gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -D__SMP__ -m32 -pipe -mno-fpu -fcall-used-g5 -fcall-used-g7 -c -o signal.o signal.c In file included from /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/tty.h:26, from /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/sched.h:22, from /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/mm.h:4, from /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/slab.h:14, from signal.c:9: /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/serialP.h:163: warning: `struct pci_dev' declared inside parameter list /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/serialP.h:163: warning: its scope is only this definition or declaration, /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/serialP.h:163: warning: which is probably not what you want. gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -D__SMP__ -m32 -pipe -mno-fpu -fcall-used-g5 -fcall-used-g7 -fno-omit-frame-pointer -c -o sched.o sched.c In file included from /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/tty.h:26, from /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/sched.h:22, from /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/mm.h:4, from sched.c:27: /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/serialP.h:163: warning: `struct pci_dev' declared inside parameter list /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/serialP.h:163: warning: its scope is only this definition or declaration, /usr/src/linux-2.3.16/include/linux/serialP.h:163: warning: which is probably not what you want. sched.c: In function `schedule': sched.c:699: warning: implicit declaration of function `prepare_to_switch' sched.c:709: warning: implicit declaration of function `switch_mm' sched.c:722: structure has no member named `tss' sched.c:722: structure has no member named `tss' sched.c:722: structure has no member named `tss' sched.c:722: structure has no member named `tss' sched.c:722: structure has no member named `tss' sched.c:722: structure has no member named `tss' sched.c:722: structure has no member named `tss' sched.c:722: structure has no member named `tss' make[2]: *** [sched.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.3.16/kernel' make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.3.16/kernel' make: *** [_dir_kernel] Error 2
Are there some other files I have to replace or update before building a 2.3 kernel?
