SubjectNFS & Make Getcwd problem rpc.kmountd?

I have the following setup

Machine A : kernel 2.2.5 with knfs

Machine B : MCA version of Suse Linux 5.2 with kernel 2.0.35 with MCA
patches.

Mount b:/ on /gate on A

10.1.2.1:/ on /gate type nfs
(rw,nolock,soft,rsize=4096,wsize=4096,addr=10.1.2.1)

Using A, with GNU Make version 3.76.1 (libc5 version):

cd /gate/usr/src/linux

make dep ( well anything actually)

I GET errors like:

/gate/usr/src/linux/scripts/mkdep *.[chS] > .depend; fi
floppy.c needs config but has not included config file
make[2]: Leaving an unknown directory
make: getcwd: : I/O error
make[2]: Entering an unknown directory
make[2]: getcwd: : I/O error
if [ -n "amigamouse.c apm_bios.c atarimouse.c atixlmouse.c busmouse.c
cd1865.h c

It seems to work despite these errors.

If I replace machine A with a machine running Redhat 5.2 ( kernel 2.0.36),
I don't get the errors, which points to rpc.kmountd.
