Subject2.2.3-pre3 - `make modules_install' doesn't.
Date
I just built a 2.2.3-pre3 on an i386, a small kernel with lots of modules.
Here's a list of all the modules that were _not_ installed by
'make config && make dep && make bzImage modules && make modules_install':

aci.o esp.o on20.o rocket.o
acquirewdt.o fit2.o on26.o saa5249.o
actisys.o fit3.o opl3.o sb.o
ad1816.o friq.o opl3sa.o sgalaxy.o
ad1848.o frpw.o opl3sa2.o softdog.o

epia.o msnd_classic.o radio-sf16fmi.o wavefront.o
es1370.o msnd_pinnacle.o radio-typhoon.o wdt.o
es1371.o msp3400.o radio-zoltrix.o x25.o
esi.o nvram.o riscom8.o

The list does not significantly change from kernel version to version,
except that new entries seem to appear and old entries are never deleted
(i.e. never installed properly). Am I missing something?
Is linux/Documentation/modules.txt wrong?

The list of missing modules includes all of the sound, video, irda,
parport, nfs ... basically all the modules that are new since 1.3.50
or so. In the past I've been copying them by hand from the modules/*.o
symlinks to `/lib/modules/<version>/misc' with no ill effects except
that it's generally the hardest thing to explain to someone who's
compiling a kernel for the first time.

323 modules not listed here (all of fs, net, scsi, video, block, cdrom,
ipv4, and ipv6) do get installed successfully.
