SubjectRe: TCP hangs over PPP on kernel 2.2.1, ok on 2.0.36

kernels are 2.0.36 and 2.2.0, all modularized, pppd 2.3.5, net-tools 1.50,
all compiled with gcc-2.8.1, libc-5.4.43.
