I've been using transparent proxying on 2 busy squid servers without any noticed problems. One is a RH 5.2 system upgraded to 2.2.9. The other is RH 6.1 using RH's 2.2.12-20 kernel. Both are using aic7xxx SCSI and md striping for the squid cache_dir.
