This is quite believable: it gets reset when parport_pc loads, and it
might be a bit dazed for a short time afterward.

What exactly is getting autoloaded -- the whole parport stack? Can you
see how long after parport_pc loads you have to wait before things are
okay again? Put a post-install parport_pc rule in modules.conf to sleep
for varying numbers of seconds.
