As Alan Modra brought to my attention, we've already got 2.9.1.0.xx stated as a minimum in Documentation/Changes, so we can safely change all those 'movl %ax, %ss' to their correct form as 2.9.1 is smart enough to compile it correctly, albeit silently (2.9.5's are more vocal about it).
It was somewhere in the 2.8's (IIRC) where the instruction was misassembled. I had forgotten that it was that long ago.
So in other words, it's being fixed.
