This has been happening since kernel 2.3.20 right up to kernel 2.3.29. I've never seen a compiling bug run for this many releases.
I'm running Debian potato, using gcc 2.7.2.3.
gcc272 -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/local/src/linux/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -fno-strength-reduce -DCPU=686 -c -o init/main.o init/main.c init/main.c: In function `start_kernel': init/main.c:489: `memory_start' undeclared (first use this function) init/main.c:489: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once init/main.c:489: for each function it appears in.) make[1]: *** [init/main.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/src/linux' make: *** [stamp-build] Error 2
