Two things: 08:11 is /dev/sdb1, not sda11. Can you manage to reproduce it doing the backup to /dev/null instead of the actual tape drive? Something else to try might be moving the tape drive onto a different controller (I'm assuming the tape drive is SCSI and on the same chain as everything else).
