I wanted to post some strace output on the pump command in case someone could lend some help with my problem. Briefly, I am able to configure my second ethernet connection (eth1) with kernel 2.2.9-19 form the stock mandrake 6.0 release but when I try to so with a newly compiled 2.2.13 kernel I get this error message:
