This is a heartfelt thank you to all of those involved in developing the Linux kernel, it is a fantastic achievement.
Personally I run linux (2.2.12) on a dual processor Pentium 90 (over clocked to 100) and am very pleased. (Originally based on Linux Mandrake)
My linux server does a very nice job of serving the internet connection for my house, as well as files via Samba, amongst other things.
BTW Linux with SMP and a S3 Trio64 (2MB) - using X (3.3.3.1) and fb console - crashes (hangs, with screen half redrawn on a virtual console) soon after boot, so I swapped to a S3 Virge and have not looked back.
Version info: -- Versions installed: (if some fields are empty or looks -- unusual then possibly you have very old versions) Linux piglett 2.2.12 #3 SMP Sat Oct 2 18:35:57 EST 1999 i586 unknown Kernel modules 2.1.121 Gnu C pgcc-2.91.66 Binutils 2.9.1.0.25 Linux C Library 2.1.1 Dynamic linker ldd (GNU libc) 2.1.1 Linux C++ Library 2.9.0 Procps 2.0.2 Mount 2.9r Net-tools 1.52 Console-tools 0.2.0 Sh-utils 1.16 Modules Loaded nls_iso8859-1 nls_cp437 parport_probe parport_pc ppa parport sd_mod scsi_mod ppp slhc zftape ftape isofs ide-cd sbpcd cdrom serial af_packet nfsd lockd sunrpc ipx 3c509 ne2k-pci 8390 tulip vfat fat opl3 sb uart401 sound soundcore unix
It also spits out a broken pipe on line 18.
