Its probably a bug with the chips ne2000 emulation. One thing to know is that ne2k-pci has less bug workarounds in it than ne (since most pci clones are reasonably ok). So try
rmmod ne2k-pci insmod ne io=0xe400 irq=9
and see if that is any happier
