It is even not an optimization, but it is required to provide internal routing consistency. I see, it is bad news for you.
Now good news :-) There is a hole (read, bug) in 2.1: if you make SO_BINDTODEVICE to your PtP device, packet will go through this device.
And bad news again: these packets will be dropped on another end of link, because IP considers them as the the most weird spoofing attempt. This check can be turned off by commenting several lines in kernel. If you really need it, I can supply patch.
