No new code needs to be written. The exact functionality you desire can be obtained using a recent 2.1.x linux kernel and a recent 2.1 glibc. When these development version become stable enough to make it into the standard distributions, uses of this functionality will become more wide-spread. The new semantics comply with the Unix98 standard, which is similar to both BSD and Sun-style pty management. Most portable applications already support this.
