i've exchanged mail with somebody who posted a similar problem to the newsgroups. they got it working by replacing their Biostar motherboard with a SP-P5VD. (i don't know exactly what brand that is, sorry).
from what I can gather, it's not the chip, but that a number of motherboards aren't stable with it. however, considering that at least one person (lindsay computer systems, www.jumpnet.com/~lcs/) seems to be selling linux boxes based on the tx-97 and the K6, it does work.
note that it only works with certain (recent) revisions of the TX-97, at least according to the Asus web site.
