I'm not going to continue this thread. It is impossible for everyone to have started their daemon at the same time. Therefore, the hits are spread out. Further I am quite familiar with finger servers, we have hundreds (literly) of them.
I could modify the tool to make an inquiry on a special port on one of my machines, but I don't have information about when a new version is available to test. If I had that information, I would have taken the "hits". Presently, the only system that has that information is ftp.kernel.org.
Now, if ftp.kernel.org were to send one of my machines email when a new development kernel is available, I would be happy to provide the tool and the machine to take the "hits". The network traffic, and the CPU time used, is in the noise.
