I know this is not a kernel issue, but you are the people using bleeding edge kernels. I have a procps patch that will fix top, and any other program that uses the "libproc" to get info from /proc/meminfo. This does not include "free," which I don't use, so was too lazy to fix.
I am not going to post it here because it is not a kernel patch, but you can get it from ftp://eliot213.wuh.wustl.edu/pub/patches/procps.diff.gz.
