This looks good, except that I compile the kernel as a normal user instead of as root. I would really like to see the "user@host" kept in the kernel version string. This string is also kept in a file in the /proc directory, which might break any utilities that parse it.
Actually, one of my wishes for 2.1 is to seriously clean up the output of the boot messages to make them look a bit more "friendlier". Your patch looks like a reasonable first step.
