The last time I had problems with the aic7xxx.seq, I found I needed to delete the aic7xxx_asm program and let make rebuild that program (which is the code which converts aic7xxx.seq to aic7xxx_seq.h). Give that a try...

It works for me:
binky:/proc/scsi/aic7xxx$ uname -a Linux binky 1.3.97 #3 Wed May 1 09:50:45 EDT 1996 i586 binky:/proc/scsi/aic7xxx$ cat 0 Adaptec AIC7xxx driver version: 3.0/3.0/3.0
Compile Options: AIC7XXX_RESET_DELAY : 15 AIC7XXX_CMDS_PER_LUN : 2 AIC7XXX_TWIN_SUPPORT : Enabled AIC7XXX_TAGGED_QUEUEING: Disabled AIC7XXX_SHARE_IRQS : Enabled AIC7XXX_PROC_STATS : Disabled
Adapter Configuration: SCSI Adapter: AHA-2940 (AIC-787x chipset) Host Bus: Single Base IO: 0xe800 IRQ: 11 SCB: 4 (16) Interrupts: 1879 Serial EEPROM: True Extended Translation: Disabled SCSI Bus Reset: Enabled Ultra SCSI: Disabled Target Disconnect: Enabled
Maybe we should have a look at the rest of your configuration to see what the problem might be.
