I'm not sure what you have in mind but wouldn't something like
sk = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_{DRAGM,STREAM}, IPPROTO_MASQ);
be better ?
since it requires knowledge on the part of the app that uses it i think that separating waters is better that some strange tweak.
we can add protos to a family... the world doesn't end with the BSD API... as long as we document it.
