Would it not be best to avoid tha Alpha Alpha confusion by asking not "Do you want to be prompted for the Alpha stuff" but rather asking "Do you want to be prompted for the Alpha quality stuff" or "Do you want to be prompted for the experimental stuff" or even "the preliminary stuff?" and avoid the word Alpha altogether for describing the quality of something? This would also lend itself to having a preliminary directory that wouldn't conflict with the alpha directory that describes the machine rather than the state of the software.
