The new sysvinit works a bit differently than the one that came with slackware. You could read the documentation on it ;) And yes, sysvinit switches to runlevel 6 (6 is reboot, 0 is halt) and expects you to provide the appropriate shutdown scripts. Look in sysvinit-2.60/debian/etc for the vanilla ones. It's just a lot more System V like ;)
