After my 1.3.85 seemed to work fine, I tried to do some torture tests: I have a aic7xxx (2940) SCSI disk and else a plain vanilla configuration. When booting with "mem=2M" the system didn't finish the swapon process withing one minute; then I gave up. Free memory was below 100k then. When I booted with "mem=3M" the system came up. For some stupid reason I decided to start X windows, but after several minutes I zapped the server (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace). Emacs came up fine.
Summary: Depending on the hardware, the aic7xxx driver seems to work quite fine. There might be a problem with swapon if memory is really tight. I had no memory corruption under heavy I/O. 4MB pages (P100 stepping 5) seem to work with less than 4MB of RAM.
