I'm not sure if this is appropriate behavior or a sign of a problem, but I have a number of sockets stuck in the FIN_WAIT2 state and they have been that way for a rather long time. Now, I do believe they are eventually (several hours) going away, but I wasn't sure if this was the appropriate behavior or not. The machine had no problems till today and it has been up about 4 days under moderate load and connections.
Here's what netstat -o shows:
Active Internet connections Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address (State) User tcp 0 0 isr0954.urh.uiuc.:http 198.240.111.114:1100 FIN_WAIT2 root on (535.29/14) tcp 0 0 isr0954.urh.uiuc.:http 198.240.111.114:1109 FIN_WAIT2 root on (597.81/14) tcp 0 0 isr0954.urh.uiuc.:http pc307.stuco.uni-k:1611 FIN_WAIT2 root on (23.36/13) tcp 0 0 isr0954.urh.uiuc.:http wsmaclab25.spl.or:1272 FIN_WAIT2 root on (527.58/9) tcp 0 0 isr0954.urh.uiuc.:http wsmaclab25.spl.or:1275 FIN_WAIT2 root on (532.99/9) tcp 0 0 isr0954.urh.uiuc.:http 143.113.21.176:1351 FIN_WAIT2 root on (494.87/2) tcp 0 0 isr0954.urh.uiuc.e:ftp 194.23.140.123:1164 FIN_WAIT2 root on (773.98/15) tcp 0 0 isr0954.urh.uiuc.e:ftp 194.23.140.123:1197 FIN_WAIT2 root on (258.88/11) Active UNIX domain sockets Proto RefCnt Flags Type State Path
