That probably is the problem. During my run-in with xconfig, the .config file got trashed. When I reconfigured, I set the ELF binary compatibility as Module. Apparently, when it is set to be a module, you don't get the option about compiling as ELF. I set it to YES, and then I was able to set the compile-as-ELF option. I haven't tried recompiling, but assume that will fix it. I don't know if the above is a bug or a feature...
