The timing in protected mode is a bit diffreent than in real mode. MSDOS might not be the best memory tester.

I can imagine that gcc-2.7 optimizes the code a bit harder, wanting more from your RAM. Usually a NMI is created on parity error detection. Could it be that your RAM above 1MB has no parity/is defective?
