SubjectFont on a per-console basis

Does the kernel currently have the capability to provide a different font
for a particular tty, and to transparently switch between them when the
user switches consoles?

If not, how difficult would this be to add into the kernel and how would I
go about it, and/or is it possible to emulate this from within userspace,
perhaps by trapping console acquisition and releases, and messing around
accordingly?

Oh, and lastly, what format are the font files in
/usr/lib/kbd/consolefonts in and how would I go about making a new font?
Metafont?

Thanks.
