Yup, you really need to use binutils 2.7.0.3 together with libc 5.4.x
(x=10 is a safe bet). Another possibility (untested, though) is
binutils 2.6.0.14 + libc 5.2.18.

I had the same problem - undefined reference to __start/stop___ex_table_
before, when I was using binutils 2.7.0.3 and libc 5.2.18. Upgrading to
5.4.10 solved the problem for me.
