I discovered syslogd: /dev/console: I/O error in one of the log files. What gives?
Another (possibly related) problem is that at about the same time that the timestamp on the syslog message I logged out and logged back in and 'ps -aux' revealed that the login process and login shell from the previous login where swapped out to disk but alive. Doesn't look right from here.
