We evaluated this approach initially but it needed a communication
mechanism between the VF and PF drivers and also would have added in a
lot of complexity in passing MCDI messages back and forth. Hence, MCDI
over PF isn't possible.

Can you please elaborate on this? vdpa datapath doesn't involve the
hypervisor and the host driver as virtqueues terminate between guest
virtio-net driver and the hardware. Even the doorbell operations are
memory mapped and IRQ bypass allows interrupts to be delivered directly
to guest vCPU.

Where exactly are you recommending the address check to be placed?
