another possibility it to rename the function to <var>_show and change

static DEVICE_ATTR(foo, 0444, <var>, NULL)
to
static DEVICE_ATTR_RO(<var>)

and also use

DEVICE_ATTR_RW

with appropriate function renaming where feasible.
