I don't like the idea of creating a new set of opcodes for each new flavour.
Did you try to extend write*?

What is this doing here? It's related to append only.
Should be in struct io_rw or whatever.

Great, a function was asked to return @cflags arg, but it decides to
overwrite the field with its own stuff...

Why not pass it in @cflags?
