Yeah, your gcc doesn't have the -ffreestanding handling. Mine (from gentoo) has this in the -dumpspecs output:
*cc1_options: ... %{nostdlib|nodefaultlibs|ffreestanding:-fno-stack-protector} ...
to switch off the default ssp when the standard libraries aren't available.
