I believe it is already generic enough that it could be used by other vendors.
It supports a preparation phase (erase the flash, any other setup required),
A writing phase (transfer data from a source file to the device), a programming
phase (waiting for the hardware to perform the udpate), and an optional cleanup
phase (any clean up that needs be done unconditionally, whether or succeeds or
fails).
