Would this be a possible alternative - newline terminated (convert any newlines embedded in filenames to the 3 chars '%0A', and leave it as an exercise to the reader to de-convert them.)
Line formatted ASCII files are really nice - worth pissing on embedded newlines in paths to obtain.
