SubjectRe: support of older compilers
[Ob l-k]

I have not yet investigated, but my (vanilla) 2.6.9
has a mouse problem that my vanilla 2.6.8.1 does not have:
it starts selecting text as soon as I touch it for the first
time, as if the initialization created a fake mouse-down event.

[old stuff]
