Maybe he should boot the kernel with "hdx=ide-scsi" appended to force using IDE-SCSI emulation on his CD-RW drive.
Another possibility is reconfiguring cdrecord to use "ATAPI=" or "/dev/hdx" device naming conventions, thus using ATAPI instead of IDE-SCSI.
