As of 2.2.14, lockd needs to be started manualy. The latest nfs-utils
suite (see http://nfs.sourceforge.net/) contains a program to start
lockd.

2.2.* < 2.2.14 and 2.4.* start lockd automatically. Hopefully 2.2.18
will too.
