I get a similar lockup with this combo on 2.3.51:
Driver: Promise Technology, Inc. 20262 (rev 01) Disk: Model=IBM-DPTA-353750, FwRev=P51OA30A, (4 disks total) MoBo: Asus P2B
Works OK without DMA, the onboard PIIX4 works OK with DMA.
