This has been brought up numerous times: please read Documentation/Changes and notice that it says you need a binutils version *at least* 2.9.1.0.7 before you should even try compiling any 2.3 kernel.
You should always take a look at that file to see if you need to upgrade before posting a (now) faq. :)
