I've noticed the exact same problem with a Sony CRX100E (ATAPI CD-RW drive being used as a CD-ROM drive) and 2.3.18 (SMP w/Ingo's H3 patch). IDE CD-ROM support is compiled as a module (kernel config available to whoever it's useful to)
