It looks safe providing nobody is ever touching it without holding the
right locks. One person fiddling with them out of the locks and its going
to get the cache_size wrong over time and then boom.. exit stage left

The cache sizes are per-cpu on SMP, there are no locks, it was
designed this way on purpose.
