Sounds like you might be using polling mode(default) for parport_pc.
Polling mode seems to be VERY slow on some hardware(including mine).
You may try specifying IO and IRQ to the module on startup, ie. modprobe
parport_pc io=x irq=n. See if that speeds printing for you.
