Looks like you just not avare about `grep'. If you'll scan recent (recent == month old here :-) linux-kernel archive for update_vm_cache you'll find TONS of messages with this "discowery" and explanation: FAT was broken in 2.3.7 and not fixed yet (Linus does not look very disapplointed, though)...
