These are some numbers I got a couple of days ago. I encountered no accessing past end of device errors, or data curruption.
2.2.10// cc# time cat /tmp/logs/*.log >all.log 0.26user 19.06system 1:57.68elapsed 16%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k 0inputs+0outputs (175088major+96minor)pagefaults 47swaps
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 761660601 Jun 26 00:58 all.log
v2.3.9.prev4 kernel compile.. 280.92user 16.58system 4:58.20elapsed 99%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k 0inputs+0outputs (-1633536653major+1226620712minor)pagefaults 0swaps
2.3.9.pre4// cc# time cat /tmp/logs/*.log >all.log 0.39user 18.50system 2:35.28elapsed 12%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 0maxresident)k 0inputs+0outputs (186088major+12minor)pagefaults 0swaps
