The etherexpress driver may well be broken for SMP. I'll look the code over and see if I can spot any obvious problem areas.
In 2.3 terms I hope to get around to writing a generic 82586 driver to handle eexpress, 3c507 and so on and hopefully these problems should come out in the wash.
